Food enthusiasts have always been keen on experimenting with food in terms of its flavour, the process of making, and its appearance. After all, culinary art is all about playing with ingredients and sculpting your imagination into something tastefully consumable. With the uprising indulgence of people in social media handles, food bloggers have started using simple ingredients, to create new, innovative ways of baking boring meals fun and interesting.

With the whole world jailed in their home, with social media and news channels clouding the mind with bleak events of the year 2020, the social media reels of these experimented dishes became a hit on various social media platforms.

Food bloggers started coming up with innovative ways to provide content for people to cook, using simple ingredients available at home and have fun in their kitchen with their meal. A staple beverage such as coffee became ‘Dalgona Coffee’ and was the most popular trend of the year 2020. However, another such trend took over the internet, when TikTok user, Sydney Melhoff, created mini pancakes out of her leftover pancake batter and put it in a bowl with some milk and posted it on the platform. Soon, the ‘dip and dots’ of Sydney’s experiment, became a social media sensation ( Provencher, 2020).

The idea of ‘mini pancake cereals’ inspired many food bloggers to create their own bowl of cuteness. Soon, the summer during the pandemic saw a flood of the mini version of various dishes, turned into a cereal bowl. Some of these bowls included mini cupcake cereal, mini muffin cereal, mini cinnamon-roll cereal, mini doughnut cereal, mini cookie cereal, even mini pie cereal. The obsession with mini cereals grew so popular that food bloggers did not just stop at making dessert cereal bowls. A lot of food bloggers kicked it up a notch and started making mini savory cereal bowls. One can also find a mini sushi cereal bowl on the internet among a few other savory options in cereals (although, these are not so popular).

The idea of making mini cereal bowls was convenient during the lockdown as well. With factories shut down, and limited food accessibility, these mini cereal trends came in handy for people with no cereals in their food stack. With simple ingredients, people were able to make these cereals for them and their family and enjoy a good hearty breakfast without missing out on the cereal.

Technically, the time to prepare these mini treats are extensive. However, with people having lots of time in hand in the early stages of the lockdown, this sure became a fun way to spend their time in the kitchen and playing with what they love the most- food.
