There is no denying in the fact that the pandemic caused by the virus COVID-19 has changed all aspects of life for each and every individual across the globe. Now that we have moved into a time where a vaccine has been formulated and people have started engaging with the same, the precautionary measures to avoid getting in contact with the virus should still remain intact. WHO and many other leading health organizations update regularly about how one can stay safe and take preventive steps to stay safe, however, even after those measures, one can still be in the danger of getting in contact with the virus.

It is understood that the second wave of COVID-19 is in its full force, bringing along new symptoms and could be more dangerous as well. Lockdowns and night curfews have been made in many parts of the country in order to prevent the spread of the virus, which is basically the steps taken by the government. To fight the virus with more efficiency, individual measures need to be taken just as strictly which include wearing masks, disinfecting surroundings, washing hands regularly, washing and/or cleaning the packs of food items, deliveries and washing fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly amongst many others. During self-quarantine or not, nutrition needs and approaches have also changed since last year as every individual needs to be more and more careful with the engagement of materials from outside their homes.

Here is a list of advices that one can keep in mind with the changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic:

· Fruits and Vegetables should be your go-to! There has been no evidence to state that the virus can be transmitted through fresh fruits and vegetables. Consumption of fruits and veggies will not only help in creating a good environment for your body, but are a healthy alternative that palatable foods which may be rich in carbohydrates and fatty acids. Fruits and vegetables should be thoroughly washed and hands should be washed before and after engaging with them as well.

· Nuts and Meats Whole grain and nuts such as maize, oats, brown rice, wheat, almonds, coconuts, pistachio among others can serve as a healthy introduction to diets. For those who consume meat, having meat 2-3 times a week like chicken, fish, eggs and milk can also benefit to maintain immune system along with the aforementioned grains. Raw meat should be thoroughly cleaned before cooking. White meats are generally lower in fats.

· Having groceries delivered is a safe option if the provider of the same follows personal hygiene practices. Hands should be sanitized or washed after receiving the delivery and mask should be worn properly while accepting the deliveries.

· There is no evidence that garlic, herbal or ayurvedic products, ginger, pepper or other such products help in “prevention” of the virus. However, if you consume such products for personal health and nutrition, you may continue to do so as there is no evidence that they carry the virus either.

· Consumption of moderate amounts of unsaturated fats and oils is necessary to the body too. While one can always avoid processed foods and fast foods which are rich in trans fats, there is no harm in taking a cheat day once a while! *wink wink* While receiving delivery for such packages of processed foods from outside, one needs to keep in mind their personal hygiene and also must order from providers who give details of the delivery personelle like their temperature and if they are taking proper measures. Applications like Zomato, Big Basket and Swiggy etc have served as an ultimate support for food and grocery provision through these difficult times and the people who have been delivering items deserve a shoutout as well!

· Rely more on getting raw and fresh foods and cooking at home than eating out. With the second wave leading to more and more cases by the day, it is always safer to clean the foods thoroughly and cooking than going out to eat and engaging with many kinds of viruses in the air or surfaces. Ensure to keep cooked food away from raw food.

· Water! Drink as much water as you can every day, at least 8-10 glasses. Water not only can help to avoid eating while procrastination or boredom, but mainly helps to transport nutrients in the blood, keeps your body temperature cool and helps getting rid of wastes in the body.

· A healthy lifestyle of engaging with nutritious foods, regular sleep, meditation and/or exercise and yoga can help one’s immune system and also seek emotional stability in such a difficult time.

While the time may seem difficult, it is not impossible to beat. This may be the new “normal” for the world, but together by taking the right preventive measures, by educating and reminding others to take them as well, eventually, we can overcome it.
