Agriculture is being the most essential one, and also the source of livelihood for many people. I live in a village, which is surrounded by many farming lands. This village is known for its beautiful climate. It looks like a small town surrounded by a number of farming lands. Every time we go out, we can experience the beautiful weather. So, here we will look at one of the farming family and their experience in the pandemic.

Being the third generation on continuing farming the rice cultivation. It has been a lot of effort that has been put into the lands, as there are no workers in the pandemic. Always there had been workers who have been involved in doing the daily works in their farming land. But the pandemic has brought a huge difficulty in bringing up people together. Interestingly this has brought the young children in the families to get into the field and learn the process of farming. While asking about the reason behind the children learning to farm, the answer they said is, “Since there is no much work in the lockdown, we started to find some interest in learning few farming techniques from our father and grandfather. Also, there were no workers at those times. So, we started to do small works in our land daily, it was a great time pass for us”. while enquiring about the techniques and the process in farming it is understood that there have been few differences between the two generations. The devices which are being used in the farming lands are modernised nowadays. But it was all manual before few years, people used to plough the land using the long stick which has two strings by the side and it will be pulled by cows and men together. The labour was by the person who holds the device and ploughs the land for a whole day.

Now there is a lot of inventions that have brought ease to the workers with the new machines which are way better than the old one. This has been used by them for the past few years and it is quite easy for the family to follow it in the lockdown period. “It would have been difficult without the new inventions”, they said.

These are like the external blades that will be attached to a tractor, which they usually use for farming and then the blades does its own job. The only labour is to drive it in the field. After ploughing the land, the sowing process was also done by the family members itself and everything was a great experience for them, said the family. It was very nice to hear form the young children who had been all day with their father learning and helping as much as they could in the pandemic times.
